Introduction and Project Overview
On June 4, 2025, the Chief of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada Molina, initiated the groundbreaking ceremony for Utopía Ceylán, a transformative project in the Azcapotzalco alcaldía. This ambitious initiative aims to revolutionize the lives of its residents by ensuring access to sports, culture, science, technology, environment, and care services.
Project Details
- The project spans 30,000 square meters at the Ceylán Sports Complex, with complete renovation of all areas.
- The introduction of “Centurión,” an intelligent robot, to the “Rubotopía” robotics school.
- Utopía Ceylán will feature the House of the 3Rs, an infant care center (6 months to 6 years), a daycare for the elderly, an ice rink, tennis courts, an auditorium for 400 people, and comprehensive medical services including gynecology, nutrition, mental health, and more.
Key Features of Utopía Ceylán
Clara Brugada emphasized that Utopías represent a model of a different, inclusive city integrating all social requirements and rights of the population. The project focuses on the future of the city, territorial justice, and public investment in previously neglected areas.
Sports
- A semi-Olympic pool (capacity: 3,000 people), an athletics track, free tennis courts, and an ice rink for hockey and figure skating.
Culture
- A 400-person auditorium for film, theater, dance activities, and ballet workshops.
Public Care System
- The House of the 3Rs: An infant care center (6 months to 6 years), a daycare for the elderly, a rehabilitation center for people with disabilities, free public laundry, and a community kitchen.
- A spa for women.
Health
- General and specialized medical consultations, including gynecology, nutrition, geriatrics;
- A clinical laboratory for free analyses;
- A mammography machine for breast cancer detection;
- Prevention Station Condesa;
- A full-life center with mental and dental health services.
Environment
- Projects promoting community use and urban farming.
Science and Technology
- “Robotopía,” a robotics school with the support of UNAM’s intelligent robot “Centurión,” providing access to science and technology for children, youth, and adults.
Supporting Statements and Collaboration
The Secretary of Public Works and Services, Raúl Basulto Luviano, confirmed the construction at Ceylán Sports Complex, encompassing 30,000 square meters for total renovation. Existing sports facilities will be maintained and improved, with additions like a semi-Olympic pool, an 870-meter synthetic track, and areas for care, health, rehabilitation, environment, supply, and food, including a community kitchen and tortilleria.
Secretary of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Pablo Yáñez Rizo, highlighted the significance of science and technology in Utopía Ceylán, given Azcapototzalco’s productive, logistical, entrepreneurial, and industrial character. He announced workshops on axolotls, the brain, nanotechnology, and a central robotics project supported by UNAM and its “Centurión” robot.
Community Engagement and Future Events
Alcaldesa Nancy Núñez Reséndiz expressed excitement for the first Utopía in Azcapotzalco, emphasizing its importance for chintololos and chintololas in a neighborhood with limited sports and cultural spaces. She thanked the Mexico City Government for its support and highlighted citizen participation in the consultation process for this project enhancing life quality with care, sports, cultural, and recreational spaces.
Upcoming Events
The Secretariats of Tourism, Culture, and Environment invite the public to the “Nopal Fair” on June 7 and 8 at the Revolution Monument, featuring over 100 Milpa Alta producers, nopal terraces, interactive activities, a gastronomic nopal contest, and a unique nopal thorn-removal contest. The Secretariat of Culture will declare nopal terraces as city cultural heritage, host an Orquesta Típica de la Ciudad de México concert, and present an artist-intervened nopal exhibition.
