On June 5, 2025, in Mexico City, the Head of Government, Clara Brugada, announced an ambitious environmental plan to transform the capital into a “Sustainable Utopia.” The announcement came during the celebration of World Environment Day, highlighting her administration’s urgency and commitment to environmental protection.

Key Components of the Environmental Plan

  1. Sponge City and Reforestation: The plan aims to reforest urban areas by planting 40 million trees and plants over the next six-year term.
  2. Zero-Emission Mobility: Brugada emphasized the importance of reducing pollution from transportation.
  3. Circular City: A massive campaign for waste separation will be relaunched to promote recycling and reduce landfill waste.
  4. Combating Climate Change: The plan includes reducing CO2 emissions, promoting clean energy sources, and launching “Eco-Villages” programs to encourage eco-friendly technologies in homes, such as solar heating and rainwater harvesting.
  5. Clean Metropolitan Air: Collaboration with the State of Mexico to review and improve vehicle verification, “Hoy No Circula” programs, and environmental contingency measures.
  6. Protection of Wildlife and Animal Welfare: Two new veterinary hospitals, clinics in “Utopia” neighborhoods, and more dog parks will be constructed.
