Financial Support Distribution Following Atypical Rains in Mexico City
In response to the emergency caused by unusual rainfall on June 2, Clara Brugada Molina, the Head of Government for Mexico City, led the distribution of financial aid to 736 families residing in Ejército de Oriente, La Colmena, Ermita Zaragoza, Vicente Guerrero, Juan Escutia III, San Lorenzo Xicoténcatl, and Ignacio Mejía in the Iztapalapa district.
Aid Distribution Based on Severity of Impact
The financial aid, totaling over 11.63 million pesos, was distributed according to the level of damage each family experienced. Cheques were given out in three denominations: 5,000 pesos (green), 10,000 pesos (orange), and 25,000 pesos (red) based on the water depth in their homes, as determined by the Secretariat for Integral Management of Risks and Civil Protection (SGIRPC).
- Less than 15 cm of water: 5,000 pesos
- 15 to 45 cm of water: 10,000 pesos
- More than 45 cm of water: 25,000 pesos
Brugada Molina’s Commitment to Addressing the Issue
Brugada Molina emphasized that this financial support is separate from the insurance resources allocated by the city government for emergency situations. She assured the affected families that her administration would continue to support them and work on long-term solutions, such as building new drainage systems, to prevent future flooding.
Additional Support Measures
Alongside the financial aid, various support measures were implemented by different city departments and institutions:
- Food and Supplies: 27,000 food rations, 700 cleaning kits, 180 mattresses, 13 sleeping bags, and 1,332 water jugues were distributed.
- Medical Assistance: 63 healthcare personnel provided medical attention, and 354 people were vaccinated against tetanus, hepatitis, and other diseases.
- Housing Inspection and Support: 300 homes were sanitized and fumigated, with 820 pieces of sportswear distributed. The Secretariat for Housing is addressing 126 damaged houses through its improvement program.
Future Infrastructure Projects in Iztapalapa
Brugada Molina announced that the city government is updating project studies for a new collector in Ejército de Oriente and other rainwater infiltration projects, such as transforming unit habitational parking areas into sponge-like spaces.
