George Russell Secures First Win for Mercedes in 2025 Season

The Canadian Grand Prix served as a launchpad for Mercedes to assert dominance in the tenth race of the 2025 Fórmula 1 season.

Both Mercedes drivers, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, climbed the podium. Consequently, Mercedes regained second place in the Drivers’ World Championship with 199 points, still trailing McLaren’s 374 but surpassing Ferrari’s 183.

McLaren entered Canada as the clear favorite, having won seven of the previous nine races with Oscar Piastri (5) and Lando Norris (2). However, both collided on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit with three laps remaining while battling for a top-five position.

As a result, Norris finished last, while Piastri salvaged fourth place and 12 points for McLaren.

Russell claimed victory, marking his fourth career win in Fórmula 1 and Mercedes’ first since the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

“It’s incredible to be back on top; the last time was in Las Vegas. I thought we had lost the win last year, but we got it today, likely due to an incredible pole position yesterday,” Russell said in the post-race conference.

Prior to Canada, Mercedes’ peak in the 2025 season was third place, achieved by Russell in Australia, China, and Miami.

Antonelli, on the other hand, secured his first Fórmula 1 podium at 18 years, nine months, and 21 days old, making him the third-youngest driver to accomplish this feat, behind Lance Stroll (18 years, 7 months, and 27 days in Azerbaijan 2017) and Max Verstappen (18 years, 7 months, and 15 days in Spain 2016).

Antonelli reached his first podium in just ten races, having debuted this season as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement at Mercedes.

His best result before Canada was fourth place in the Australian Grand Prix, which opened the 2025 season. Now, Canada will be etched in his Fórmula 1 history.

Mercedes had been second in the 2025 Constructors’ World Championship until after Monaco but stumbled in Spain and dropped a position. Following Canada, they reclaim second place and regain confidence from their 1-3 finish with their drivers.

“I’d love to get excited, but I believe our car’s strength lies in these cooler conditions. We’ll see how we fare in upcoming races, but for now, we’ll enjoy it. Time will tell. We won in Austria last year, so maybe it’s a good omen, but for now, we’ll enjoy it,” Russell added.

This marked the first Mercedes victory since 2019 in the Canadian Grand Prix, which debuted in Fórmula 1 in 1967 and has a contract until 2031.

Lewis Hamilton was the most recent Mercedes driver to hoist the team’s name to the top in Canada during his penultimate WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP campaign.

The Canadian Grand Prix 2025 podium was completed by Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing, who added 18 points to maintain third place in the current Drivers’ World Championship with 155, trailing McLaren representatives.
