About Expo Seguridad México
Expo Seguridad México, established in 2002, is a significant event that brings together providers and users of the security industry. The scope covers various technologies and solutions in security systems, including alarms, surveillance, access control, cybersecurity, law enforcement, telecommunications, automation, artificial intelligence, vehicles, and drones. Over time, educational programs with conferences and workshops have been integrated to keep the sector updated.
Rising Crime Rates in Mexico
In 2022, the crime rate in Mexico was 28,701 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants, with 26.8 million crimes and 21.1 million victims. The most common offenses were fraud, robbery or assault on streets or public transportation, and extortion. The perception of insecurity has increased, with 61.9% of Mexicans feeling unsafe in the first quarter of 2025.
Technology’s Role in Addressing Crime
Paola Buenrostro, Product Manager of Expo Seguridad México, emphasizes that technology offers responses to these challenges, from early warning systems to artificial intelligence for detecting violence patterns. However, she stresses that the key lies not only in technology but also in fostering a security culture.
- Technological Advancements: Technologies like electronic wristbands for at-risk individuals, urban surveillance networks using AI to detect suspicious movements or patterns, mobile apps and chatbots like Violetta or Sophia for psychological and legal support to victims of violence, and digital community mapping where people identify risky areas have significantly advanced security. However, they still face challenges related to coverage, budget, and political will.
- Importance of Community Involvement: Buenrostro highlights that technology alone may be ineffective or counterproductive if it doesn’t consider all citizens’ voices during design and implementation. She also mentions the importance of well-lit, sustainable environments, and safe pedestrian paths as crucial elements for citizen security.
- Successful Implementations: In Iztapalapa, for instance, the installation of 310 CCTV cameras and 72,346 streetlights between 2018 and early 2024 not only improved urban aesthetics but also reduced street crimes against women by 75%. Similarly, facial recognition cameras have helped predict potential criminal behaviors.
The Cultural Aspect of Security
Buenrostro underscores that security isn’t solely about technology. Even with significant investments in advanced technologies and AI, if there’s no information on how to better protect oneself while navigating a large, chaotic city—such as avoiding distractions like using phones or carrying bags vulnerably—these efforts could be in vain. It’s about cultivating a security culture and learning how to navigate urban environments safely.
Community Engagement and Technology Integration
Buenrostro encourages the use of the “Mi Policía” app, which integrates various technologies and public security intelligence to provide citizens with information about their neighborhood quadrants. This division, along with citizen chats, keeps the public informed and alert, enabling more efficient action.
Expo Seguridad México Invitation
Buenrostro invites the public to participate in Expo Seguridad México, where attendees can explore educational programs, videovigilance, access control, law enforcement advancements, and more to develop genuine security strategies.
