Introduction
The e-commerce boom has led consumers to platforms like Amazon, Mercado Libre, and social media marketplaces such as TikTok and Facebook for purchasing a wide range of products. However, foreign online stores like Temu, Shopee, Alibaba, and Shein present additional risks beyond typical digital fraud.
Understanding the Risks
According to INEGI, 33.4% of Mexican internet users shop online primarily, making them vulnerable to potential issues with foreign e-commerce platforms. The Mexican Federal Consumer Procurator (PROFECO) has identified two major concerns: delivery times and deceptive advertising.
- Delivery Times: Many foreign stores, predominantly Chinese, ship products directly from Asia. PROFECO reports cases where products take over 60 days to arrive after purchase.
- Deceptive Advertising: Users have reported falling for ads promising extremely low prices on items like smartphones, gaming consoles, or common goods, only to receive a photo or poster instead of the actual product.
Another challenge is the return process. Some platforms, like Alibaba, require users to initiate a request with the seller for returns, and if denied, start a dispute resolution process with the platform. This can prolong the process for several weeks.
Additionally, some products may be subject to import taxes or have high shipping costs. PROFECO warns that foreign businesses aren’t obligated to display total prices, including all charges upfront. Most add shipping, customs fees, and taxes only at the payment stage.
Safety Measures
PROFECO advises consumers to take several steps to avoid financial loss and frustration from failed purchases on foreign platforms:
- Choose Domestic Stores: Opt for virtual stores with a physical presence in Mexico, allowing authorities to intervene if necessary.
- Research Reviews: Look for customer reviews and comments about potential issues before purchasing from an unfamiliar platform.
- Thorough Product Description Review: Carefully read the full product description, as titles may overpromise while the detailed description reveals a different item.
- Cybersecurity Measures: Shop online using an antivirus-equipped device and updated browser. Read the platform’s terms and conditions along with privacy policies to ensure your data’s security.
Who are these Foreign Online Stores?
Temu, Shopee, Alibaba, and Shein are popular foreign online stores that offer a vast array of products at seemingly unbelievable prices. However, these platforms’ lack of a physical presence in Mexico can lead to complications when issues arise.
Temu, owned by Wish, is known for its fashion and home goods. Shopee specializes in electronics and fashion items, while Alibaba serves as a global wholesale marketplace. Shein, a fast-fashion retailer, offers trendy clothing at low prices.
These platforms’ popularity stems from their wide product selection and low prices, but consumers must be aware of the associated risks to protect themselves from potential scams and delivery issues.
