Strengthening Peace Culture in Michoacán
On April 16, 2025, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, the Governor of Michoacán, signed and published an administrative decree prohibiting the issuance of permits for music performances that promote criminal glorification in public events across the state. This action aligns with the security strategy of Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
Decreed Regulations
Starting April 17, the new regulations published in the State’s Official Gazette will prevent performances at any public venue, including plazas, auditoriums, stadiums, entertainment centers, fairs, and other public spaces that may incite violence through specific music genres.
- Genres affected: Corridos tumbados, narcocorridos, corridos progresivos, corridos bélicos, and corridos alterados or any music alluding to criminal groups or individuals associated with them.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Violating this decree will result in economic and administrative sanctions, including temporary or permanent event suspension, venue closure, license revocation, and fines up to 700 times the value of the Unidad de Medida y Actualización (UMA). These penalties will be enforced by the Secretariats of Governance and Public Security, with inspection operations conducted accordingly.
Allocation of Fines
Governor Bedolla mentioned that the fines collected from event organizers will support musical groups and orchestras of children and teenagers from the Purépecha Highlands region.
