Introduction to Erick and its Effects
Erick, an atmospheric event that struck Mexico as a hurricane and remained on land until dissipation, primarily affected the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero. Oaxaca suffered significant infrastructure damage, while Guerrero tragically recorded the only human loss – a two-year-old child from San Marcos in the Costa Chica region.
President’s Response and Travel to Affected Areas
Following Erick’s passage, Mexican authorities initiated rehabilitation efforts and assistance for affected populations. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo visited the most-impacted communities, stating: “We are heading to Oaxaca, to the most affected area. Fortunately, there were not many impacts; however, Oaxaca had the most significant damages. Some isolated communities require support from Defensa and the Navy. The impact wasn’t limited to the coast but also affected the Isthmus, particularly Juchitán, due to river overflow. We are going there to coordinate efforts and resume our tour of the southeast.”
Situation in Oaxaca Post-Erick
The affected municipalities in Oaxaca are: San José Estancia Grande, Santa María Cortijo, Santo Domingo Armenta, Santiago Tapextla, Santa Maria Huazolotitlán, Santiago Jamiltepec, Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, San Juan Bautista Lo de Soto, and Santiago Llano Grande.
On June 21, federal and state authorities remain on high alert due to the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional’s (SMN) warning of heavy rains, thunderstorms, and wind gusts up to 40 km/h across the state. Authorities urged the public to stay in safe locations.
To support residents of the Costa region affected by Erick, personnel from the Instituto de Planeación para el Bienestar distributed supplies to the DIF center.
Governor Salomón Jara Cruz toured La Palma del Coyul, inspecting damages in Pinotepa Nacional’s localities. He maintained the Operativo de Seguridad en Salud due to river overflow following Erick, providing medical and nursing care, preventing diarrheal, respiratory, dermatological, and vector-borne diseases. The Vector Department conducted fogging and larval control in shelters, evaluated by COEPRISO.
In the Costa region, the Unidad de Inteligencia Epidemiológica y Sanitaria of the Servicios de Salud offers comprehensive and timely care in Collantes, Cruz del Itacuán, and El Chivo, Pinotepa Nacional district.
Preventive actions are taken to avoid epidemic outbreaks, safeguard public health, and assist the most affected families.
Restoration in Huatulco After Erick
Within 24 hours, basic supplies in affected areas returned to normal operation following Erick.
The Centro Integralmente Planeado (CIP) Huatulco swiftly initiated actions to restore public services and rebuild essential supplies in affected zones within 24 hours.
Situation in Guerrero Post-Erick
Similar to Oaxaca, Guerrero authorities monitor potential low-pressure development south of Oaxaca and Chiapas coasts, with a 70% probability of evolving into a cyclone within seven days, as Erick did.
Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda reported visiting various Costa Chica communities to tally affected individuals and distribute food and other aid.
The affected municipalities in Guerrero are Ometepec, Cuajinicuilapa, and San Nicolás.
Salgado Pineda mentioned schools among the most damaged infrastructure, with recovery actions underway. Blankets were also distributed to affected families.
State authorities delivered food and essential supplies to those impacted by Erick, operating four community kitchens in Punta Maldonado and El Tamale (San Nicolás), and La Petaca and Col. Miguel Alemán (Cuajinicuilapa) to provide three meals daily for those in need.
Guerrero’s government activated 21 Temporary Shelters in eleven coastal municipios, accommodating and securing 1,292 individuals.
CFE Actions Following Erick
The Comisión Federal de Electricidad reported at 13:00 that it had restored power to 91.7% of affected users due to Erick.
Four out of five 115 kV lines were restored, benefiting 253,975 out of 276,910 users. Additionally, 25 out of 35 medium-voltage circuits are fully operational, while ten are partially restored.
