Tech Giants Invest in Nuclear Energy for AI Development
New York State’s Governor, Kathy Hochul, announced on Monday a project for the construction of a new nuclear power plant, the first major plant to be built in the United States since 2009.
Project Details
Hochul collaborated with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to develop a nuclear power plant with a capacity of at least one gigawatt, as stated in a press release from the state government.
Location and Community Support
The plant will be built in northern New York, where Hochul mentioned during a press conference that several communities are eager to host the facility due to the promise of well-paying, long-term jobs.
Tech Industry’s Role in Nuclear Energy
Major tech companies are investing in nuclear energy to power the massive data centers required for developing artificial intelligence.
Addressing Safety Concerns
Hochul acknowledged some residents’ doubts about safety but expressed confidence in the “21st-century nuclear design.”
“Friends, it’s here and it’s back. If we don’t hop on or lead this, they’ll just move on to something else,” warned the governor.
Nuclear Energy’s Recent History in the US
US energy companies have attempted to expand nuclear capacity, a sector with a poor reputation in the country following the Three Mile Island accident in Pennsylvania in 1979.
