British Driver Overcomes Recent Error to Lead Ferrari and McLaren Teammates
British Formula 1 driver Lando Norris of McLaren clinched the pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix, held at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. This achievement comes two weeks after Norris made a mistake during the Canadian Grand Prix, causing him to crash with his teammate Oscar Piastri.
Norris’s Dominant Performance
Norris outperformed his competitors, securing the top spot by 0.521 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and 0.583 seconds ahead of his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, who leads the championship. Norris expressed his satisfaction with the qualifying session:
“It was a very good lap, and I’m really happy. It’s been a great day so far, and I hope to continue this momentum tomorrow,” said Norris.
His performance is particularly impressive considering the short duration of the qualifying lap, which barely exceeds one minute. Norris now aims to maintain his momentum in the race and reduce the 22-point gap separating him from Piastri in the world championship standings.
“A Bit of Frustration” for Colapinto
Despite the challenges Ferrari drivers typically face in qualifying sessions, Charles Leclerc managed to secure the second-best time. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) qualified fourth, followed by George Russell (Mercedes), who won in Spielberg last year and triumphed two weeks ago in Montreal.
Liam Lawson, driving for Racing Bulls, outperformed Max Verstappen (Red Bull), the seven-time world champion from the Netherlands. Verstappen, who has claimed the last four pole positions at his team’s home circuit, only managed to secure the seventh position and will start alongside rookie Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber) and Lawson, the surprise of the session.
“We didn’t go well in qualifying. There isn’t a single corner where the car feels good, and that’s a significant problem,” Verstappen admitted after the session.
“I don’t think we’re in a position to compete against the McLarens… They’re on another level, but hopefully, we can be competitive against the Ferraris or Mercedes at least tomorrow,” added the reigning world champion.
Italian Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) and French driver Pierre Gasly (Alpine) completed the top ten.
Spanish Drivers’ Performance
Veteran Spanish driver Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) struggled in free practice sessions but narrowly missed advancing to Q1 and will start from the eleventh position.
Argentine driver Franco Colapinto (Alpine) also failed to make it to Q1 and will start fourteenth. Colapinto expressed his disappointment:
“It’s unfortunate. When I see myself just a tenth away from the top ten, it gets frustrating, but we need to keep working,” said the 22-year-old driver.
Spanish driver Carlos Sainz (Williams) fared worse, not advancing past Q3 and will start from the penultimate position.
