This deception often occurs through social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, which have become crucial channels for telecom companies to target specific audiences.

While enticing phrases like “More gigabytes for the same price,” “Best quality connection at the best price,” or “Coverage across Mexico and other parts of the world” are common, they may mislead consumers if not backed by accurate information.

Identifying Deceptive Advertising

According to Profeco, advertising can be classified as deceptive if it falls under these categories:

  • False: Promises something that does not exist or cannot be delivered.
  • Misleading: Manipulates information to influence consumer perception.
  • Selective: Omits relevant information to make the ad more appealing.
  • Exaggerated: Overstates product or service features.
  • Artificial: Creates unrealistic expectations.
  • Inaccurate: Lacks precision about the services offered.

Recommendations to Avoid Deception

To prevent falling for these deceptive practices, Profeco advises consumers to:

  1. Read the entire contract before signing, paying close attention to terms and conditions.
  2. Verify that the advertised attributes match the contracted service.
  3. Ensure that the total amount, price, and rate are clearly stated and expressed in national currency.
  4. Confirm that any promotion clearly indicates its duration, restrictions, and conditions.
  5. Avoid contracting a service if the advertising is unclear or raises doubts.

If you encounter deceptive advertising related to telecommunications services (mobile or landline phone, internet, or pay TV), Profeco encourages you to submit a complaint via email to [email protected]. Include the following details:

  • Name and address of the provider being reported
  • Screenshot of the advertisement
  • Description of the misleading content

Profeco emphasizes that consumers are not obligated to contract a service if the advertising lacks clarity or creates uncertainty.
