A Rich and Diverse Summer Season at the Sala Nezahualcóyotl
The Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería, under the direction of Carlos Miguel Prieto, is set to present an extraordinary Summer Season 2025. Running from July to August, this eight-program series will feature both classic and contemporary works. The lineup includes renowned composers such as Beethoven, Dvorák, Mozart, Stravinski, John Adams, and Mexican composers Juan Pablo Contreras and Arturo Márquez, who will premiere new monumental works.
A Weekly Feast of Musical Delights
Carlos Miguel Prieto, the artistic director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería, promises an unforgettable season. “Each week brings fresh musical experiences alongside beloved classics,” he explains. “Highlights include Rajmáninov’s ‘Danzas sinfónicas,’ Dvorák’s ‘Sinfonía N° 9,’ Mussorgsky’s ‘Scenes from an Exhibition,’ and Beethoven’s ‘Symphony N° 9.’ Additionally, we’re thrilled to have guest conductors and soloists such as Lina González-Granados, a distinguished Colombian director, and John Adams, an acclaimed living composer, who will conduct Program 8 featuring his ‘Concerto for Violin’ with Augustin Hadelich as soloist.”
Weekly Stellar Soloists
Prieto emphasizes that each week will feature an exceptional soloist, making the season truly remarkable. “We kick off with Pablo Sáinz Villegas, a world-renowned guitarist who will perform the world premiere of Arturo Márquez’s new work,” he says. “Other soloists include Asier Polo, a distinguished cellist; mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges; violinist James Ehnes; pianists Anne Marie McDermott, Jorge Federico Osorio, and Francesco Piemontesi; and many more. This lineup ensures an unforgettable experience for music lovers.”
A Tribute to Kaija Saariaho
Program 4 will pay tribute to the late Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho with the performance of her work “Cielo de invierno.” Prieto notes, “Our programming aims to balance new and engaging works for the connoisseur with popular pieces that appeal to a broader audience.”
A Challenging and Exciting Program
Prieto highlights one particular program as especially challenging and exciting: Program 6 on August 9th and 10th. This program will feature the world premiere of Juan Pablo Contreras’ “Sinfonía N° 1,” alongside Dvorák’s “Sinfonía N° 9” and William Walton’s “Concerto for Violin” with James Ehnes as soloist. Prieto asserts, “This program will electrify the audience with its novelty and the performance of a renowned symphony.”
A Collaborative Masterpiece
Program 1, on July 5th and 6th, opens with Gabriela Ortiz’s “Téenek” and closes with Rajmáninov’s “Danzas sinfónicas.” The centerpiece of the inaugural concert is the world premiere of Arturo Márquez’s “Místico y profano,” featuring Pablo Sáinz Villegas on guitar. The Spanish guitarist shares his enthusiasm: “For years, I’ve dreamt of Arturo Márquez composing a concerto for guitar and orchestra, following in the footsteps of Ponce and other composers who elevated the sinfónica guitar. That day has come, and I’m incredibly excited.”
A Moving Finale
The closing gala on August 30th and 31st will include Mozart’s “Piano Concerto N° 27” and Beethoven’s “Sinfonía N° 9,” performed by the Orquesta y Coro de Minería. Samuel Pascoe will conduct, with soprano Karen Gardeazábal, mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Paz, tenor Travon D. Walker, and bass Harold Wilson as vocalists. Francesco Piemontesi will perform as piano soloist.
