Historical Context and Challenges of Social Mobility in Mexico
According to a study by the Centro Espinoza Yglesias, Mexico has struggled to achieve widespread social mobility for nearly eight decades, despite various development projects implemented by successive political regimes.
During almost 40 years of the last century, the authoritarian Imperial Presidency’s development models enabled social mobility that Mexico hadn’t experienced since the social turmoil of the Revolution. However, the revolutionaries who revived the Imperial Presidency and built a powerful mechanism of high-return electoral support failed to establish a development model that offers a people with so many needs the dignified path of social mobility.
Security Laws: The Least Worst Option?
There are concerns about potential misuse of the instruments granted to the government by Congress to combat violent criminal organizations. The issue lies in the governing elites being cornered by their own purportedly pacifist argumentation, which lacked the courage to declare a constitutional state of exception.
It might be the lesser evil to grant the excessive power that security initiatives approved by Congress provide, given the high blood cost of the constitutional “state of exception” formula to wrest control from criminal organizations in many regions of the Republic.
Order in the New Supreme Court
Based on Minister Loretta Ortiz’s statements, who has been serving in the Supreme Court of Justice for four years, there is hope for organization amidst the challenge posed by the ignorance-driven decision to eliminate the penal and administrative matter handling chambers, leaving everything to the plenary.
The court now ventures into uncharted territory, and only the veteran justices’ training capacity for the enthusiastic newcomers can be relied upon to navigate through uncharted waters.
