Spanish Tennis Sensation Advances to Quarterfinals for Third Consecutive Year

Carlos Alcaraz, the rising Spanish tennis star, is on track for a historic third Wimbledon title. For the third consecutive year, Alcaraz has advanced to at least the quarterfinals of this prestigious Grand Slam tournament. He is set to face Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic in the final stretch towards the championship.

Alcaraz’s Dominant Performance Against Rublev

In a thrilling match against Russian Andrey Rublev, Alcaraz showcased his exceptional form. Despite losing the first set 6-5, Alcaraz rallied back with a series of three consecutive sets, winning 6-3, 6-4, and 6-4. The match concluded after two hours and 43 minutes.

Alcaraz’s Wimbledon Success and Learning Curve

Wimbledon has been a stronghold for Alcaraz in 2023 and 2024, with victories over Novak Djokovic in both years’ finals. In 2025, he has already secured four wins against Fabio Fognini, Oliver Tarvet, Jan-Lennard Struff, and Andrey Rublev. With an impressive 22-match winning streak, Alcaraz aims to join the elite group of six male tennis players who have won at least three Wimbledon titles, including Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Pete Sampras, Bjorn Borg, Boris Becker, and John McEnroe.

However, Alcaraz acknowledges that there is still room for improvement on the grass court, which is unique to Wimbledon.

“Sliding well on grass is crucial for my confidence in movement. I try to be free and mobile, especially when defending. At Queen’s, I was a bit nervous before the second round on grass, but once I started sliding, those thoughts disappeared, and I felt more comfortable.”

Upcoming Quarterfinal Opponent: Cameron Norrie

Alcaraz’s next opponent is British player Cameron Norrie, who he leads 4-2 in their head-to-head record. Norrie, 29, reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2022 and has only reached the quarterfinals twice in Grand Slam events. He defeated Chile’s Nicolás Jarry in five sets to advance to the quarterfinals.

Alcaraz recognizes the challenge Norrie poses, especially with home support behind him:

“He’s playing at home, so the crowd will be on his side. It will be different. I need to stay mentally strong and focused throughout the match if I want to win.”

Other Quarterfinal Matches

In addition to Alcaraz and Norrie, two more quarterfinal matches were determined on Sunday. American Taylor Fritz, the fifth seed, advanced after his opponent Jordan Thompson retired due to injury. Russian Karen Khachanov also progressed by defeating Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak in straight sets.

The remaining quarterfinal matches will take place on Monday, featuring Italian Jannik Sinner against Grigor Dimitrov and Novak Djokovic facing Alex de Miñaur. Two more Italian players, Flavio Cobolli and Lorenzo Sonego, will also compete, facing Marin Cilic and Ben Shelton, respectively.

The men’s draw has already lost four of its top eight seeds by Sunday, with Jannik Sinner (1) and Novak Djokovic (6) set to enter the fray on Monday.
