Attack on a Band for Refusing Narcocorridos
Two recent events during our vacation have exposed the erosion of our convictions and the confusion surrounding what is right and wrong. The first event was a violent attack on a band performing at the Texcoco fair, which refused to sing narcocorridos. The crowd turned on them, beating and destroying the stage, ending the performance while authorities stood by and most of the audience did nothing.
Governor’s Justification for Corruption
The second event was a video of Colima’s Morenista governor explaining to a journalist why one must take advantage of their position and enrich themselves. She reportedly said, “If you get to a position and don’t steal, people will think you’re naive. I don’t want people to think I’m naive, so I will take advantage of the situation.”
While banning narcocorridos at public events may not solve the issue of violence or improve national morality, it is clearly not a solution. Freedom of expression has limits, as the law states these are exceeded when they affect public peace, morality, or good customs. Narcocorridos indeed cross these lines.
Deeper Issues at Hand
However, the problem runs deeper. In the case of the Colima governor, the issue is distinct. Her words reflect the mindset within Morena, suggesting that power is meant for personal gain, to escape poverty and change social class after years of struggle. There’s a sense of revenge, similar to priísta eras when people said, “At last, the revolution has done me justice.”
Societal Reaction: Complicit Silence
The response from society has been surprising. There’s authority reaction to the band attack, but socially, there seems to be a complicit silence. Regarding the governor, there’s no direct criticism, explicit condemnation, or calls for accountability from her party or the federal government. This suggests a shared complacency and complicity among Morena, the federal government, and the rest of society.
