Navy Intercepts Large Cocaine Shipment in Guerrero
Elements of the Mexican Navy (Semar) intercepted more than four tons of cocaine along the coasts of Guerrero state in two separate operations conducted recently.
First Operation
During the first event, naval personnel conducted aerial patrols on board a Panther-type helicopter when they spotted a GoFast-type boat with several occupants. Upon inspecting the vessel, naval officers discovered 38 bundles containing brick-like packages that tested positive for cocaine. The total weight of the shipment was 1.8 tons.
The five detained individuals, the alleged drugs, and the boat were secured and transported via sea to the Octava Región Naval dock, where they were handed over to the Fiscalía General de la República for further investigation, according to an official communication without additional details.
Second Operation
In the second action, also off the coast of Guerrero, naval elements found 64 floating bundles at sea containing packages with alleged cocaine, weighing a total of 2.4 tons.
The cargo was secured and handed over to the Fiscalía General de la República for investigation, reported the Security Cabinet.
Impact on Crime
Under President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, more than 36 tons of cocaine have been seized in maritime operations. These blows to organized crime have reportedly caused an estimated economic impact of nearly 9 billion pesos for the involved cartels, according to the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection.
In Guerrero, the most recent seizures were made by the Mexican Army and National Guard in mid-April during surveillance patrols in Chilpancingo. Authorities discovered 26 kilos of cocaine and 296 kilos of marijuana, as per the authorities’ report.
