Historical Origin of August
August, the eighth month of the year, was named in honor of Emperor Octavian Augustus (Octavius Augustus) in 8 AD. In the ancient Roman calendar, which began with March, the sixth month was called “sextilis.” After January and February were added at the beginning, it became the eighth month of the year. In August 30 AD, Octavian Augustus triumphantly entered Rome after defeating Cleopatra and Mark Antony.
August also marks the midpoint of summer, so the agricultural sector must prepare for one of the hottest months and protect crops from pests and rising temperatures.
