Customer Visits Down, but Spending Up in Physical Stores
In the first half of 2025, retail stores located in shopping malls and on high streets saw a 3.5% decrease in customer visits, with March, April, and June recording the lowest number of people. This decline is attributed to a lack of innovative experiences and product availability, according to Getin.
However, January maintained a good percentage of visits due to the presence of offers and discounts, explains Francisco Álvarez, commercial director and co-founder of the platform.
Holiday Seasons Boost Retail Performance
Festive periods like Easter and May 10th helped retail recover, as the foot traffic saw a 2.5% growth compared to the previous year. During these seasons, customers prefer visiting shopping malls, according to Getin’s report “Challenges of the Mexican Retail for Connecting with the New Consumer 2025”.
Competitive Retail Environment with Declining Interest in Stores
The retail landscape in Mexico has become more competitive, as consumers visit malls and high streets more often. However, their interest in entering stores has slightly decreased.
Anabell Trejo, CEO and co-founder of Getin, explained that promotions or product launches are factors that attract consumers, driving sales for retail stores.
The report indicates that regions with the highest store visits are in northern and central-north Mexico, including Jalisco, Aguascalientes, and the Federal District. Nevertheless, shoppers only pass by stores for entertainment and not with the intention of purchasing.
Meanwhile, the average time a person spends in a retail store during the first quarter of the year was 9.58 minutes, which saw a slight growth compared to 9.56 minutes during the same period in 2024.
This growth was due to January and discounts, a period when people spend more time looking for clothes,” argues Anabell Trejo.
Rising Average Ticket, Stable Item Count
The percentage of visits that resulted in a transaction, or conversion of purchase, saw a slight increase. The best months were January, February, and April, driven by early-year offers and festivities that favored the intent to buy.
Overall, the conversion to retail purchases grew slightly by 0.5 percent. Retail stores remain a destination with growing attraction and maintained visits with the intent to buy,” comments Anabell Trejo.
On the other hand, the average ticket in retail increased by 5.6% due to higher-value product sales and marketing strategies like upselling and cross-selling. This growth was more pronounced in shopping malls, with an 8.3% increase, while high-street stores saw a 5.3 percent rise.
However, the number of items per ticket did not show significant changes. So, what caused the average ticket to increase if retail visits decreased? Anabell Trejo explains that people are
spending more money than last year.
“People are willing to spend more for good service, product quality, and we know this because brands have increased sales. Also, due to inflation, but there are still high-value products,” she adds.
Retail Projections for the Third Quarter
The report also presents predictions regarding retail stores. Using Artificial Intelligence, it shows that shopping malls will outperform high-street locations due to a projected decrease in store visits.
However, improvements are expected in purchase conversion and items per ticket at shopping malls.
