National Survey on Electoral Reform

Mexico City’s Mayor and President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a national survey to gauge public opinion on key topics for the upcoming electoral reform. The proposed changes include reducing funds to political parties, eliminating proportional representation, and addressing the future of the National Electoral Institute (INE).

“Citizens dislike excessive resources allocated to political parties and elections. These large sums are unnecessary for democratic elections,” Sheinbaum stated, also expressing dissatisfaction with the current high number of plurinominal seats.

Sheinbaum emphasized that these changes should not be decided solely by experts or political parties but rather by the citizenry. She plans to hire reputable survey firms to conduct the poll and gather direct opinions from the population.

Key Points of Proposed Reforms

  • Reduce financial resources for political parties
  • Eliminate proportional representation (plurinominal seats)
  • Redefine the role and autonomy of the National Electoral Institute (INE)
