Background and Relevance

In response to the changing international trade policies, the Guadalajara chapter of the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) has launched the first Council of Large US Companies operating in Jalisco and other western Mexican states. This initiative aims to anticipate risks and capitalize on opportunities arising from these policy shifts.

Who’s Involved?

The council comprises 13 US companies with significant operations in Jalisco, including leaders from sectors such as agroindustry, beverages, professional services, and advanced manufacturing. These companies are represented by CEOs or vice presidents.

Council’s Objectives

According to Ernesto Sánchez Proal, president of AMCHAM, the Council of US Companies serves as a strategic platform to strengthen the economic relationship between Mexico and the United States from Jalisco. It facilitates the sharing of privileged information among top executives to anticipate risks, take preventive actions, identify opportunities, and act promptly.

Optimistic Projections

Sánchez Proal shared that, based on the US government’s measures—such as a 90-day extension for implementing a 30% general tariff—the corporations in Jalisco anticipate that the changes will not be “too drastic” due to the upcoming renegotiation of the Trading Free Trade Agreement (T-MEC) between Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

Although some additional tariffs are expected, the majority of companies do not foresee significant alterations in their operations. Moreover, they project substantial growth by 2026. The current growth has been moderate in 2025, but a more intense growth is expected in 2026. This growth is driven by technological advancements, particularly the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, which is boosting not only manufacturing companies but also service and other sectors demanding more services, like financial consultancy.

Council’s Role and Impact

The Council of US Companies will meet regularly, and the minutes from each session will be shared with Jalisco’s state government economic cabinet. AMCHAM will act as an interlocutor with state and federal authorities, ensuring effective influence on public policies that can help mitigate perceived risks and better leverage opportunities for member companies.
