Claudia Sheinbaum Announces Progress of Vivienda para el Bienestar Program

The Mexican federal government, through the Secretaría de Desarrollo Agrario, Territorial y Urbano (Sedatu), reported that over 1.564 million people have benefited from reduced credit rates, waivers, and settlements for both Fovissste and Infonavit housing loans. This progress stems from the Vivienda para el Bienestar program, which aims to recognize housing as a right for Mexicans.

Key Figures and Program Details

  • Total beneficiaries: 1,564,000
  • Fovissste beneficiaries: 149,000
  • Infonavit beneficiaries: 1,415,000

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo emphasized that the program focuses on providing affordable, dignified, and accessible housing near workplaces and communities. She highlighted that these homes have an area of 60 square meters, contrasting with previous housing developments built far from urban centers.

Expanded Housing Construction Goals

In addition to the credit relief, the program aims to construct 1.8 million new homes over six years, an increase from the original goal of 1.2 million. This expansion includes:

  • Infonavit: 1.2 million new homes
  • Fovissste: 100,000 new homes
  • Comisión Nacional de Vivienda (Conavi): 500,000 new homes

Sedatu’s Edna Elena Vega Rangel added that the Sociedad Hipotecaria Federal (SHF) will contribute 100,000 credit loans. This results in a total investment of 1 trillion pesos, generating 5.7 million direct jobs and 8.5 million indirect jobs through the Vivienda para el Bienestar program.

Current Progress and Future Plans

This year, 395,000 new homes will commence construction as part of the sexenial goal. Infonavit will lead with 300,000 homes, with 120,464 already underway. Conavi will construct 86,000 homes, while 42,825 have started. SHF will soon initiate 9,000 projects.

Moreover, the target for home improvement credits has increased from 1.5 to 1.8 million credits and supports over the six-year period.
