Background on RENAPO and its Significance

On August 20, 1980, the Decree for the creation of the National Registry of Population and Identity (RENAPO) was published. The purpose was to maintain accurate and comprehensive information about national and foreign individuals residing in Mexico, as well as Mexican nationals living abroad for various reasons. RENAPO has been instrumental in guaranteeing the right to identity for over 45 years.

Coordination with Federal Entities

Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Secretary of the Interior, explained that RENAPO collaborates with the 32 federal entities to implement mechanisms ensuring each person has a unique personal identification key.

The Importance of the Clave Única de Registro de Población (CURP)

Rodríguez highlighted that the Clave Única de Registro de Población (CURP) has become the most sought-after identity document in Mexico and the crucial key to accessing governmental tramites and services. Currently, 130 million Mexican residents, both domestically and abroad, possess a CURP, accounting for 97.7% of the population.

Linking CURP with Biometric Data

Under the mandate of President Claudia Sheinbaum, RENAPO aims to establish the CURP as the national identification document by linking it with an individual’s facial features, iris, and fingerprints.

Enhancing Population Registration

The evolution of CURP will lead to better population registration, providing more protection and access to public and private programs and services, especially for children and adolescents without any official identification documents.

Protecting Personal Data

Rodríguez emphasized that the Mexican population is the reason the government works diligently every day, and it is also why personal data is protected with seriousness, commitment, and the highest security standards by the Secretariat of the Interior.
