About Snarky Puppy and its Founder, Michael League
Snarky Puppy is a jazz ensemble founded in 2004 by bassist and producer Michael League. The band is known for its spontaneous and unique live performances, where both the musicians and audience are equally surprised by what unfolds on stage.
A Band That Surprises Itself
League describes Snarky Puppy’s sound as an evolving experience, stating, “Snarky Puppy is a band that surprises itself with what’s being played, just as the audience does.” This approach ensures that each concert is a fresh and exciting event.
Ever-Changing Performances
According to League, “Every night, we change the show, the songs, the duration—everything is different. I don’t think about it until the day of the concert. What will we play? Which songs? Will we do something new or old? It all depends.”
Snarky Puppy’s Distinctive Approach
One of Snarky Puppy’s most notable features is their “live from the studio” concept, which they began in 2009. This approach involves having the audience present in the studio, wearing headphones, creating an intimate and immersive experience.
The Extensive Musical Collective
Snarky Puppy was formed in Denton, Texas, when Michael League joined forces with friends from the jazz program at the University of North Texas. Over time, the band has grown to include notable musicians such as Robert “Sput” Searight, Shaun Martin, and Bobby Sparks II.
The current lineup consists of 25 members, though the formation rotates nightly. Snarky Puppy musicians have collaborated with artists like Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and D’Angelo. They have also produced artists such as Kirk Franklin, David Crosby, and Salif Keïta.
Snarky Puppy’s Grammy Awards and Global Reach
Throughout its career, Snarky Puppy has won five Grammy Awards: Best R&B Performance in 2014 and Best Instrumental Contemporary Album in 2016, 2017, 2021, and 2023.
GroundUp Festival and Snarky Puppy’s Global Impact
In addition to leading Snarky Puppy, Michael League dedicates much of his time to music production. He recently produced the album “Light The World” by legendary Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour and collaborated with Mexican composer Silvana Estrada on her upcoming album “Vendrán Lluvias Suaves.”
Collaborations and Festival Involvement
League has also worked with Mexican drummer Antonio Sánchez and percussionist Pedrito Martínez on the project “Elipsis,” blending folklore with a futuristic sound. He is also the co-founder of the annual GroundUp festival in Miami, Florida, where he serves as artistic director. The festival features artist performances and educational components, including workshops and masterclasses.
Snarky Puppy’s Upcoming Tour in Latin America
Snarky Puppy is set to return to Latin America, with stops in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Curitiba, Porto Alegen, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, Frutillar, Quito, Bogotá, and Lima. The tour will conclude with performances on September 26 at C4 Concert House in Guadalajara, Jalisco, and September 27 at Auditorio BlackBerry in Mexico City.
Michael League’s Perspective on Latin America
“Latin America is one of the warmest places for us, and the joy we feel when playing comes from seeing the audience enjoy and engage with our music,” says League.
