SEP’s Initiative to Promote Women’s Full Development and Professional Parity

Mario Delgado Carrillo, the Secretary of Public Education (SEP), has signed various agreements with professional colleges in Mexico to ensure gender parity in decision-making bodies and professional certification processes. This initiative is part of a new national policy for the exercise of professions and the full development of women, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

Key Aspects of the Agreements

  1. Gender parity in professional organizations’ decision-making bodies: This will be achieved through statutory modifications.
  2. Rotation of leadership: The presidency of these organizations will be led by a woman within a six-month period.
  3. Transparency and information in certification processes: Public information and coordination with the Directorate General of Professions will be ensured.

Delgado emphasized that these actions align with two federal administration guidelines: making education a right and not a privilege or commodity, as mandated by President Sheinbaum Pardo, and promoting substantive equality and women’s rights, a key transversal theme in the National Development Plan and the Six-Year Plan.

Commitment to Substantive Equality

Eurípides Flores Pacheco, head of the SEP’s Normative Update, Legality and Regulation Unit, reaffirmed the commitment to substantive equality. He acknowledged that although women hold most professional licenses in Mexico, their representation in the directing boards of professional organizations remains insufficient.

“Women up, women’s rights, down with patriarchal schemes. With these measures, we ensure that professional women occupy the decision-making positions they deserve,” Flores Pacheco stated.

Initiating a Series of Agreements

The signing of these agreements began with the Valle de México and Mazatlán, Sinaloa Accountants’ Colleges. This marks the start of a series of agreements with various professional organizations, aiming to ensure women’s participation in decision-making bodies and promote affirmative actions for women in the exercise of professions in Mexico.

Transformative Impact on Professional Exercise

These agreements symbolize a profound transformation in the professional exercise of Mexico, as they establish a national policy that promotes substantive equality, transparency, and full participation of women.

Key Witnesses

The Director General of Professions and CENEVAL’s Director General, Carmen Rodríguez Armenta, were present as witnesses of honor. Thalía Lagunas Aragón, the Director General of Accreditation, Incorporation, and Recognition at SEP, also attended the signing.
