Key Leaders Unveil Integral Partnership and Action Plan

During a meeting at Mexico’s National Palace, President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the launch of a new strategic alliance and the Mexico-Canada Action Plan.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Both leaders emphasized the importance of enhancing bilateral relations to foster certainty, security, and prosperity in both nations. They highlighted opportunities to expand trade in key sectors such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and healthcare, along with promoting commercial missions and frequent ministerial meetings.

Reaffirming Commitment to T-MEC

Sheinbaum and Carney also agreed to strengthen and reaffirm their commitment to closely coordinate ahead of the upcoming review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (T-MEC). They agreed that T-MEC is the best trade agreement for all three nations, positioning North America as the world’s most competitive region.

Sheinbaum’s Optimism on T-MEC

The Mexican president expressed optimism about the trade agreement’s future and reiterated that competition among the three economies will continue.

“Within the framework of the trade agreement that we have with Mexico, the United States, and Canada, our economies are strengthened, and we seek greater investment and trade. What we have agreed upon in terms of our bilateral relationship is to increase investments and trade in various areas, and the extent to which this can be increased is part of what we will work on in the coming months,” Sheinbaum stated.

Carney’s Assurance on T-MEC Review

Carney assured that the T-MEC review will further strengthen all three economies, considering the collaboration of all parties.

Cooperation in Security and Collaboration

On the security and cooperation front, they agreed to continue collaboration in border control, combating transnational organized crime and human trafficking, disaster preparedness, and joint actions against climate change. They also mentioned the exchange of Canadian experiences in cybersecurity.

“There are drug cartels or gangs from one country operating in another. We share information and deepen our police cooperation, tracking, and surveillance to ensure these individuals face justice and don’t escape,” Carney explained.

Importance of the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The leaders highlighted the significance of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, which is expected to generate a $2 billion economic impact for Canada.

“We will be on the world stage, united by our love for the game,” Carney concluded.
