An Artistic Collective Showcasing Small-Scale Masterpieces
Nestled amidst the bustling streets of Mexico City’s Historic Center, between the Ayuntamiento and Victoria, near the Chinatown area, lies Dolores 54. This unique exhibition space currently hosts the second edition of Salón Mesones, a collective art showcase featuring emerging artists from Mexico, the United States, Venezuela, and Uruguay.
The Origins of Salón Mesones
Founded by Miguel Casco, Salón Mesones was born as an extension of Atelier Mesones, a drawing and painting academy. Casco explains that the initiative aims to create a space where artists, thinkers, and enthusiasts can connect beyond the classroom setting. The focus is not only on displaying artwork but also exploring how artists relate to one another, students, friends, and the public.
The Small-Scale Approach
For the second edition, Salón Mesones opted for a small-scale format. Casco states, “We decided to focus on the minuscule, forcing viewers to get close and recognize an entire universe in a tiny space.”
Curator Hugo Alejandro Vega’s Vision
Under the curatorship of Hugo Alejandro Vega, Salón Mesones Second Edition expresses its mission through the title “A Piece of Finitude to Observe the Open Sky.” The project resulted from a call that attracted over 200 artists, with 73 works by 52 artists selected for the exhibition.
‘The Sublime’ as a Unifying Principle
Vega explains that “the sublime” serves as the unifying principle in this exhibition. He describes it as a classical art history concept, referring to the feeling of terror and finitude we experience when confronted by immense magnitudes. Although our relationship with nature has changed, the sublime remains present in small-scale artworks that unexpectedly represent vast spaces and immense magnitudes.
Symbolism in the Artworks
The exhibition is rich with symbols referencing past and present stories, as well as the ethical frameworks of a disintegrating world and new worlds in formation. Between rooms, a deer and a minotaur engage in dialogue, symbolizing nature’s tranquility amidst urban violence and our fleeting existence in public transportation.
