Mexican Athletes Jesús Gutiérrez and Ángel Camacho Secure Silver and Bronze Medals
Mexico has doubled its presence on the medal table at the 2025 World Para Swimming Championships held in Singapore from September 21 to 27.
Within just three days of competition, the Mexican delegation has already secured four medals. Jesús Gutiérrez and Ángel Camacho won silver and bronze, respectively, joining Arnulfo Castorena’s gold and Camacho’s earlier bronze achieved on Sunday and Monday.
Jesús Gutiérrez Bermúdez Wins Silver in 200m Combined SM6
On Tuesday, Jesús Alberto Gutiérrez Bermúdez, a 19-year-old from Guanajuato, clinched the silver medal in the 200m combined category SM6. He also set a new continental record with a time of 2:37.06.
Gutiérrez Bermúdez expressed his happiness and excitement about the silver medal, stating, “I am very happy and content with obtaining the silver medal in my second strongest event. We continue preparing for tomorrow’s (Wednesday) main event, the 400m freestyle.”
Despite his youth, Gutiérrez has an impressive international experience. In 2024, he won a bronze medal in the 400m freestyle S6 at the Paris Paralympics. Now, his focus is on Los Angeles 2028.
Ángel Camacho Secures Bronze in 150m Combined Individuals SM4
The other medal for Mexico on Tuesday came from Ángel Camacho, who claimed the bronze in the 150m combined individuals category SM4 with a time of 2:37.65. He finished behind Russia’s Roman Zhdanov and Israel’s Ami Dadaon.
Camacho Ramírez shared his satisfaction, saying, “This is my second bronze medal in this competition in Singapore, and I am very happy that the results came through. I have three more events left, as I came to compete in five.”
Camacho still has the 50m and 200m freestyle S4, as well as the 50m backstroke S4 events remaining.
Mexico’s Medal Standings and Latin American Performance
Despite the four medals, Mexico did not manage to secure a top-10 position on the medal table in Singapore’s first three days of competition.
With one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals, Mexico is ranked 16th, tied with Japan. China leads the medal table with 12 golds, three silver, and two bronze. Italy follows closely with seven golds, seven silver, and six bronze medals, while Great Britain holds third place with seven golds, six silver, and ten bronze medals.
Among Latin American countries, Brazil is currently leading with six golds, eight silver, and five bronze medals, placing fourth overall.
