Donald Trump Endorses Argentine President Javier Milei

Background on Javier Milei: Javier Milei is the current President of Argentina, known for his libertarian policies and rapid economic stabilization efforts following a period of high inflation inherited from the previous left-leaning administration. His leadership has been compared to that of Donald Trump, the former U.S. President.

Trump’s Endorsement

During a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Donald Trump expressed his support for Argentine President Javier Milei on social media platform Truth Social.

Trump praised Milei’s leadership, stating that he has “demonstrated to be a truly fantastic and powerful leader for the great people of Argentina, advancing at record speed on all levels.” He acknowledged Milei’s efforts in restoring economic stability after inheriting a “total disaster” with high inflation caused by the previous radical left-wing president, drawing parallels to current U.S. President Joe Biden, whom Trump criticizes as “the worst president in the history of our nation.”

Trump emphasized the strong relationship between the U.S. and Argentina under Milei’s leadership, expressing his hope to continue working closely with the Argentine president for mutual success.

Argentine Minister’s Reaction

Economy Minister Luis Caputo’s Statement: Following the bilateral meeting, Argentine Economy Minister Luis “Toto” Caputo spoke to the press about his impressions.

“It was truly exciting,” Caputo described the encounter between Trump and Milei. Although he did not provide specifics about the potential agreement’s guidelines, which would offer a financial lifeline to Argentina, Caputo mentioned that “teams are talking now, and the Treasury Secretary (Scott Bessent) will likely make an announcement.”

Caputo highlighted that the support from the U.S. is comprehensive and that the meeting exceeded his expectations, calling it “historic.” He emphasized that the U.S. is a strategic ally and that there are numerous collaborative opportunities ahead.

World Bank Accelerates Aid to Argentina

World Bank’s Announcement: Shortly after Trump’s message, the World Bank announced it would expedite its assistance to Argentina, providing $4 billion in the coming months “in support of the long-term reform and growth agenda.”

The aid package will focus on public sector investments, private sector mobilization, and fostering key competitiveness drivers:

  • Strengthening the mining and critical minerals sector
  • Promoting tourism as a job and local development source
  • Expanding energy access
  • Enhancing supply chains and SME financing

This announcement is part of a $12 billion economic support package the World Bank anticipated in April, reflecting its confidence in Argentina’s government efforts to modernize the economy, implement structural reforms, attract private investment, and generate employment.
