Understanding Authenticity in the Workplace

Authenticity at work is a desirable trait for employees, as it encourages autonomous and self-determined actions that benefit organizations. However, a study published in BMC Psychology reveals that in Mexico, some workers still hesitate to show their true selves.

Findings from Indeed’s Survey

According to a survey by Indeed, only 57% of workers believe they can behave genuinely with their colleagues at any given moment. Meanwhile, 19% admit they need to adapt or limit certain aspects of their personality to fit in with others.

Although 87% of respondents consider it important to work in environments free from physical appearance judgment and segregation based on personal preferences or interests, one in five still feels the need to modify or adapt themselves to avoid judgment, particularly among women.

Gender Disparity in Authenticity

While more than half of the employees feel free to act authentically, a closer look at gender reveals that 60% of men express authenticity compared to only 53% of women. This disparity signals the need to redesign workspaces that prioritize authenticity.

What Hinders Authentic Workers?

The BMC Psychology study explains that people refrain from being authentic due to abusive supervision, fear of judgment from colleagues or superiors, or the desire to meet job requirements and avoid conflicts.

Nelson Gómez, Director of Indeed Mexico, states that the pressure to conform or hide creates invisible barriers limiting both individual and collective potential, impacting productivity and overall work quality.

Promoting Authenticity in the Workplace

A work culture that values authenticity can directly improve employee well-being, according to the BMC research. Indeed recommends fostering authenticity through organizational policies prioritizing respect and inclusion, along with active leadership.

  • Recognize and value diversity: Embrace differences in identity, expression, and work styles.
  • Ensure safe work environments: Enable employees to share opinions, ideas, and perspectives without fear.
  • Foster open and respectful dialogue: Strengthen bonds among colleagues through open communication.
