Key Figures and Context
Carol Antonio Altamirano, the president of the House of Representatives’ Finance and Public Credit Commission in Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies, has stated that the legislative branch will only approve technical and viable proposals for changes to the Federal Income Law and customs reform.
Altamirano, a member of the Morena party, emphasized that any proposed changes must be concrete, serious, and technically feasible to aid in revenue collection. He also mentioned that the committee he leads will advocate for a minimum income floor of 10.193 billion pesos for the public sector in the upcoming year, aligning with the executive branch’s proposal in the 2026 Federal Income Law initiative.
In the coming weeks, the committee plans to hold working meetings with public officials, private sector representatives, and civil society regarding the customs law reform, income law changes, and other fiscal reforms proposed by the executive branch.
Lobbying Efforts and Transparency
Regarding lobbyists attempting to reverse recent tax increases on flavored beverages, tobacco, gambling, and video games, as well as certain aspects of the customs reform, Altamirano stated that the instruction is to listen to these lobbyists during the committee’s working meetings.
“We will not accept improper pressures here; we will act transparently, listen to all voices, as long as they express themselves with respect,” he declared.
