The Urgent Need for Electrical Installation Professionalization
Guadalajara, Jalisco. Deficient electrical installations are responsible for up to 30% of deaths occurring in residential, industrial, and commercial sectors, according to David Contreras Rodríguez, president of the Colegio de Ingenieros Mecánicos Electricistas del Estado de Jalisco (CIMEJ).
Statistics and Causes of Electrical-Related Deaths
Contreras Rodríguez highlighted, “There are statistics indicating that in various sectors—including residential, industrial, and commercial—30% of deaths are due to poor electrical installations. This can be caused by the use of inadequate equipment, improper installation execution, or insufficient verification of electrical installations.”
Regulatory Framework and Consequences of Non-Compliance
He mentioned that in Mexico, the NOM-001-SEDE-2012 regulates electrical installations, stating that any installation not adhering to the Mexican Official Standard is at risk and fails to meet national obligations. Such non-compliance can result in fines or, tragically, fatalities.
Push for Professionalization in the Electrical Industry
Eduardo Mancilla Durán, president of the Association of Constructors of Electrical Works of Occidente (Acoeo), emphasized that electrical construction is often undervalued in the building industry, particularly when non-professionals construct homes and workplaces.
Importance of Certifications and Standards
“We aim to ensure that anyone handling electrical installations possesses the necessary certifications and competency standards. Currently, specialist construction companies handle electrical works without proper expertise, leading to cost-cutting measures that compromise safety,” Mancilla Durán explained.
