Understanding the MTU and Its Importance
The Monto Transaccional de Usuario (MTU) is a new limit you must set for your digital transfers in Mexican banking as part of regulatory measures to strengthen security and combat fraud. If you haven’t already configured your limit, you have until September 29 to do so through your bank’s app. Here’s how to adjust it according to different banks.
Setting the MTU: Bank by Bank
BBVA:
- Open the app
- Menu > Settings > Operation Limits
- Limit options: per transaction, daily, and monthly
Banamex:
There are two ways to set your MTU with Banamex:
- Log in to the Banamex app using your password or biometric data.
- Go to Transfer and Pay.
- Select the Transaction Limit option.
- Choose the account or card.
- Enter the amount you deem suitable based on your needs. This amount can be modified as needed by the customer.
- Verify and save your new limit.
The second way is:
- Log in to the Banamex app using your password or biometric data.
- Access the chosen account.
- Select the Transaction Limit option.
- Enter the amount you deem suitable based on your needs. This amount can be modified as needed by the customer.
- Verify and save your new limit.
Banorte:
Rafael Fragoso, Banorte’s Executive Director of Digital Banking, explained that there are two processes for setting transfer limits for their clients:
- For new clients: After user creation in each app activation flow, the client will reach a new step where they must set their per-transaction limits.
- The maximum limits that can be defined depend on profiles:
- Full: 5 million MXN and 400,000 USD
- Semifull: 11,500 MXN and 360 USD
- Preferente: 12 million MXN and 600,000 USD
- Regulation requires clients to confirm their limits using a code sent to their registered mobile.
- After step 3, the client applying for TRU ID validation goes through this screen; otherwise, they proceed directly to the next step.
- The client continues with activation completion by creating a password.
For existing clients:
- If a client wants to modify their transaction limits, they need to go to the menu route.
- Select General Settings
- Enter Operation Limits
- The client makes the desired changes to their daily and per-transaction limits.
- The client confirms the limits they want to set.
- Regulation requires the client to confirm these changes by entering a unique code received via SMS on their registered mobile.
- Finally, the client enters their password to apply changes and confirms.
- The limits are successfully set.
HSBC:
- Transfer and Pay
- Edit Limit
- Enter the maximum amount
- Authentication with NIP or biometric data
- Verification and confirmation SMS
Strategies for Setting Your MTU
To set your MTU, consider the transactions you regularly perform. If you have multiple accounts, remember that the amount applies to each one individually.
Analyze your habits when making digital banking transfers. Determine what you pay periodically, as this will help you customize your MTU.
