Introduction
You may have heard about a flotilla heading to the Gaza Strip to deliver humanitarian aid (food, medicine, and more) to civilians suffering under Israel’s blockade. This flotilla is called Global Sumud, composed of members from various parts of the world. Among these participants are six Mexicans, contributing their skills and expertise to support the mission.
The Mexican Volunteers
The six Mexican volunteers are:
- Sol González Eguía: A conflict mediation psychologist with experience in war and trauma contexts, providing emotional support, accompaniment, and raising awareness.
- Arlín Medrano: A journalist documenting attacks and participating in communication efforts.
- Karen Castillo: A communicator and human rights defender, documenting attacks and sharing her experiences through interviews while contributing to security protocols and visibility.
- Dolores Pérez Lazcarro: A political scientist, activist, and professor specializing in conflict resolution, driven by political and humanitarian denunciation of human rights violations.
- Ernesto Ledesma: A journalist, reporter, and director of Rompeviento TV, responsible for covering events, reporting on attacks, and direct communications from the ships.
Following the interception of the flotilla by Israeli forces, six participants, including the Mexicans, were detained and taken to Ashdod port in Israel. They were intended for transfer to the Ketziot detention center, located in the Negev Desert.
The Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE) provided consular assistance. Six volunteers accepted repatriation, while it is known that a Mexican woman traveled as legal support and was not detained, heading towards Cyprus.
