Introduction

Canal 14, part of the Mexican State Public Broadcasting System (SPR), has launched two powerful original series that emphasize socially relevant content, gender perspective, and narrative quality: “Housewife” and the second season of “Letters for Freedom.”

“Housewife”: A Hybrid Series Blending Fiction and Real-Life Testimonies

Led by actress, writer, and producer Carmen Huete, “Housewife” is a hybrid series that intertwines fiction and genuine real-life interviews in an intimate conversation setting centered around cooking. Each episode unfolds at the home of Manuela, a fictional character who invites a real person to cook a meaningful recipe while discussing profound topics such as feminicide, migration, diverse motherhood, spirituality, and sexuality.

Huete clarifies that the series aims not to romanticize the self-sacrificing woman but rather revalue those who uphold life through caregiving.

  • Key guests include Norma Andrade, a mother of a feminicide victim and human rights activist;
  • Tania Morales, founder of a support network for trans families;
  • Sharol, a Venezuelan migrant who crossed the Darien jungle;
  • Diana Luz, an advocate for autonomous mothers’ rights;
  • and other diverse voices, including a sexuologist, a stripper, a physique-culture enthusiast, and a housewife.

With 12 episodes, each lasting 45 minutes, “Housewife” airs Saturdays at 20:30 hrs on Canal 14. The series is distinguished by meticulous technical craftsmanship, with direction by Ana Álvarez Velasco and a team of public media professionals.

“Letters for Freedom”: Amplifying Second Voices from Confinement

The second season of “Letters for Freedom” continues to give voice to women deprived of liberty. This new installment expands its scope to include testimonies from women with mental health issues within the Tepepan prison, as well as cases of women under alternative measures like house arrest or GPS tracking bracelets.

Each episode offers an intimate window into these women’s lives through letters, reflections, and interviews—without passing judgment but instead highlighting the structural causes of their situations.

“We don’t discuss whether they are innocent or guilty. We talk about how the system harshly punishes those living in greater vulnerability,” explains Carmen Huete.

Comprising 16 episodes, each lasting 45 minutes, the series is also available on YouTube for permanent access.

Public Television with Purpose and Quality

These projects are part of SPR’s initiative, under Jenaro Villamil’s leadership, to strengthen fiction in public media, generate socially conscious narratives, and create space for creators committed to current issues.

Under Sandra Ortega Tamés’ direction, Canal 14 reaffirms its commitment to innovative and deeply human content.

“Public television has the responsibility to open these spaces, foster community, reflection, and empathy. And we’re doing it with quality, depth, and beauty,” concludes Huete.
