Understanding the Importance of Event Insurance

Private events such as weddings, graduations, birthday parties, or corporate gatherings often become cherished memories. However, with a large number of attendees and expansive venues, the risk of accidents or event cancellations increases. Having insurance for such events can prevent significant financial burdens in case of unforeseen incidents and provide peace of mind while celebrating.

Responsibility Civil Insurance

Responsibility civil insurance is a common coverage option for various types of policies, such as car or home fire insurance. For events, this type of insurance protects the organizer from accidents attributable to event organization.

Luis Gómez, a member of the Mexican Association of Insurance and Surety Agents (AMASFAC), explains that potential accidents in these events can stem from the infrastructure used at event venues, such as templates, platforms, or stages.

In addition to standard responsibility civil coverage, some policies offer additional coverages that can be beneficial. For example, there is food poisoning coverage or fire insurance caused by pyrotechnics. However, there is a limit on the organizer’s liability for alcohol-related incidents; once attendees consume alcohol voluntarily, responsibility shifts to them.

Insurance costs for these policies depend on the amount the organizer wants to insure for the event. A premium is paid, and there’s a monetary limit on what the insurance will cover. Some insurers also charge a deductible, typically 10%, which only applies to material damages and not personal injuries.

Another crucial aspect of these policies is the provision of legal advice and support during any event-related legal proceedings resulting from significant accidents.

Cancellation Insurance

Event cancellations can be incredibly frustrating, especially when substantial investments have been made in planning and execution. Cancellation insurance can be a valuable option, though it’s rare to find such policies in the market.

According to Gómez, insurers have been removing event cancellation products from their offerings since the pandemic began. Currently, only one insurance company provides event cancellation coverage, which is seasonal and may be unavailable after certain periods.

Primero Seguros offers a cancellation insurance policy covering event postponement or cancellation, additional expenses to avoid cancellation, photography and video services, attire, gifts, and jewelry used during the event. The coverage amount depends on the client’s chosen insured amount and the type of event, with wedding risks differing from graduation risks. The deductible is 10% for any incident.
