Background on Amazon and its CEO, Andy Jassy
Amazon, a global leader in e-commerce and cloud computing, has announced plans to reduce its corporate workforce by approximately 14,000 positions. This decision is part of CEO Andy Jassy’s strategy to streamline operations, cut costs, and prioritize investments in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
Details of the Job Reductions
In a statement, Beth Galetti, Amazon’s Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Technology, explained that the recent job cuts are part of a broader effort to reduce bureaucracy, eliminate layers within the organization, and allocate resources more effectively towards high-priority areas.
According to Reuters, the initial report suggested that Amazon might eliminate up to 30,000 corporate positions. However, the company confirmed only 14,000 reductions in this announcement.
As of the end of last year, Amazon employed around 1.56 million full-time and part-time workers. The corporate workforce accounts for approximately 350,000 employees.
Over the past two years, Amazon has gradually reduced its workforce in subsidiaries such as books, devices, and the Wondery podcasting business. These adjustments have enabled teams to operate more efficiently, and the company intends to continue managing its workforce by “reducing in some areas and hiring in others” until 2026.
Support for Affected Employees
Amazon will provide most affected workers with 90 days to search for internal opportunities. Hiring teams will prioritize these candidates when filling open positions.
Emphasis on AI Initiatives
Andy Jassy has emphasized the importance of reducing management levels and increasing reliance on AI. In June, he stated that the growing adoption of generative AI tools would decrease Amazon’s overall workforce in the coming years.
This year, Amazon plans to invest around $11.8 billion in capital expenditures, with a significant portion allocated to building AI and cloud infrastructure.
As businesses increasingly adopt AI technologies to automate routine tasks and save costs, the demand for human labor in certain areas may decrease. However, AI is also creating new opportunities and roles within organizations.
“This generation of AI is the most transformative technology we’ve seen since the internet, enabling companies to innovate faster than ever,” said Galetti.
