Introduction to Jalisco’s Infrastructure Investment
In a press conference from the country’s capital, Governor Pablo Lemus led the presentation of a comprehensive strategy involving the governments of Guadalajara and Zapopan, geared towards the FIFA World Cup 2026. This initiative aims to create significant infrastructure projects that will leave a lasting legacy for the Jalisco region.
Key Infrastructure Projects
Jalisco will inject approximately 12,000 million pesos into urban regeneration around the International Airport of Guadalajara, recently recognized as Latin America’s best. This investment will also fund new transportation systems.
- Línea 5 of public transportation will directly connect the airport, stadium, and city center, enhancing mobility for residents and visitors.
- The region is also seeing a historical hotel investment with over 40 new hotels under construction. By 2026, Jalisco will have 90,000 rooms, ensuring accommodation for the expected 3+ million visitors.
- Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta’s airports have become major hubs with 27 new routes announced in the last 10 months, connecting to 90% of the World Cup host cities.
Innovative Financing Models
Zapopan has established a trust with public funds totaling 400 million pesos, demonstrating Jalisco’s innovative approach to infrastructure financing.
“We have created a trust with resources from the state of Jalisco and the municipalities of Guadalajara and Zapopan. We have pooled around 400 million pesos, properly allocated and will not exceed this amount. We aim to maintain full transparency,” explained Juan José Frangie Saade, Mayor of Zapopan and head of the Organizing Committee.
Additionally, a private sector involvement society has raised over 120 million pesos from local businesses, civil society members, and entrepreneurs. This model, endorsed by FIFA Mexico, has proven so effective that other World Cup host cities have adopted it.
Economic Strategy Beyond the Four Host Cities
Verónica Delgadillo García, Mayor of Guadalajara, described the FIFA Fan Festival to be held in the historic city center, projecting 65,000 daily attendees and 2.5 million visitors over 39 days. This event will stimulate local commerce, gastronomy, and services.
- A portfolio of mass-free entertainment events featuring international and local Jalisco artists aims to extend tourists’ stays and generate additional income in the entertainment and hospitality sectors.
Cultural Integration and Public Image Campaign
Jalisco is proudly positioned as “the most Mexican” host for the 2026 World Cup. The region’s cultural identity, represented by mariachi, tequila, and charro culture, will be integrated into a public image campaign that will adorn the city and its visitors with the slogan “Jalisco is Mexico,” according to Governor Lemus.
