Introduction to Generation Z in Mexico

Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2010, is among the most concerned about their community, country, and world’s future, according to a UNICEF study. However, this segment of the population also displays greater hope and capability to act against these challenges.

Key Findings from the UNICEF Study

The report, titled “Understanding How Global Challenges Affect the Mental Health of Generation Z,” conducted in collaboration with Zurich Foundation, Pinterest, and Spotify, found that 76% of Mexican adolescents and young adults consume news at least once a week, surpassing the consumption of posts from friends/family (71%). Moreover, 75% reported feeling overwhelmed after exposure to such content.

Gender Disparities

The study also highlighted significant gender gaps: adolescent girls and young women were more likely to feel overwhelmed (77% vs. 65% in boys), less secure in their communities (49% vs. 62%), and in need of more mental health support (55% vs. 45%).

“The study’s findings are clear: the mental health of an entire generation faces a silent emergency. However, adolescents and young adults not only intensely experience the impact of global and local crises but also raise their voices and are ready to reimagine their reality. Listening to their voices beyond the numbers is the first step towards truly transformative action,” said Aurore Brossault, UNICEF’s mental health and psychosocial support specialist in Mexico.

Resilience Among Generation Z

Despite emotional overload, Generation Z in Mexico demonstrates high resilience: 64% feels responsible and capable of actively participating in their present and future.

To achieve this, adolescents identified schools (81%), national governments (75%), international organizations (75%), and media (66%) as key actors to lead solutions and support them on this journey.
