Key Partnership Between Renault and Geely in Brazil

French automaker Renault and Chinese counterpart Geely, already collaborating in a joint venture for engine production, have announced an agreement to strengthen their partnership in Brazil. As per the deal, Geely will acquire a 26.4% stake in Renault do Brasil, gaining access to the company’s manufacturing plant and engineering center in Sao José dos Pinhais, located in the southern region of Curitiba. Geely will also have access to approximately 250 sales points operated by Renault’s network.

In a joint statement, both companies emphasized that this transaction “continues the strategic cooperation” between Renault Group and Geely, aiming to bolster the development of Renault and Geely brands in Brazil. The collaboration will enable the introduction of new, low-emission vehicles in the country. The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Existing Collaborations and Future Ambitions

Renault and Geely have already been partners in the joint venture Horse Powertrain, which has been operational since 2024, producing engines for combustion and hybrid vehicles. In addition, Geely acquired a 34% stake in Renault Korea in 2022. With access to Renault do Brazil’s manufacturing facilities, Geely aims to increase production and enhance the competitiveness of Renault’s industrial complex in Brazil.

In 2024, the plant produced 180,000 vehicles. Geely is one of China’s leading vehicle manufacturers, having acquired the automotive division of Swedish Volvo in 2010. Renault stated that the group holds a 5% market share in Brazil and aims to double it within five years.
