Introduction of Carlos Manzo’s Wife as Interim Uruapan Mayor
Mexico City’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has estimated that the initial draft of the “Plan Michoacán por la Paz y la Justicia” (Michoacán Plan for Peace and Justice) could be ready by Friday, November 7. This comprehensive strategy aims to address the social and economic causes of violence in Michoacán.
Key Participants and Collaboration
During a press conference, Sheinbaum mentioned that Michoacán Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedoya participated in the Security Cabinet meeting, where they reviewed the plan’s progress and decided that state secretaries and general directors will consult various sectors of Michoacán society before submitting the preliminary document.
Consultations and Plan Focus
Sheinbaum Pardo clarified that consultations with different sectors of Michoacán society will begin this Wednesday to present the plan, ideally by next week. The plan won’t solely focus on security actions but will also include a social and labor component to reduce extortion and overexploitation in key economic activities, such as avocado and lemon production.
“The exploitation of avocados in Michoacán has labor processes without formalization, lacking social security and with high levels of addiction in communities. This has allowed extortion to thrive, something that had never been addressed before. We need to address and work on this issue,” Sheinbaum Pardo stated.
Breaking from Previous Security Models
Sheinbaum Pardo emphasized that the Michoacán Plan aims to break from past security models by tackling both the structural causes of violence and rebuilding social fabric through education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.
Meeting with Carlos Manzo’s Family
Sheinbaum also revealed that she met with Carlos Manzo’s wife and brother, the late Uruapan mayor assassinated on November 1. She assured that the federal government will support the transition in Uruapan.
“We discussed justice, as they rightfully demand. However, we also talked about moving forward: she will be the interim mayor of Uruapan. Today, she takes office at the state Congress, and we agreed to maintain communication to support Uruapan within the framework of the Michoacán Plan,” Sheinbaum Pardo declared.
