Introduction to El Buen Fin and Data Security Concerns

El Buen Fin, Mexico’s largest annual sales event, is set to take place from November 13 to 17, with expectations of over 200 billion pesos in sales. However, a significant concern for 82% of online shoppers is the risk of data theft and fraud during this period, as announced by David Pizaña, Vice President of E-commerce at the Association of Internet MX.

The Rising Fear of Fraud and Data Breaches

Pizaña highlighted that the fear of fraud has grown by 67% compared to last year, with 4,000 attempted cyberattacks reported per minute. Despite not all attempts resulting in successful breaches, Pizaña advised consumers to take necessary security measures.

Official QR Code for Enhanced Security

To tackle this issue, the Association of Internet MX has introduced an official QR code for El Buen Fin’s fifteenth edition. This code allows shoppers to verify if a business is registered and participating legitimately in the campaign.

  • How to use the QR code: By scanning the code with a smartphone, shoppers can confirm if a business is verified through El Buen Fin’s official portal.
  • Additional resources: The portal also offers workshops for both merchants and consumers, along with security tips for safe online shopping.
  • Security recommendations: Pizaña emphasized the importance of ensuring websites have security locks and safe payment methods before making purchases.
  • Beware of suspicious offers: Shoppers should avoid unrealistic discounts or benefits, especially those advertised on social media, as they might be fraudulent attempts.

El Buen Fin: A Boost for Mexico’s Economy

Despite the data security concerns, Pizaña acknowledged El Buen Fin as a crucial program for economic recovery. It serves as a driving force for digital commerce and encourages national consumption.

Extended Duration and Anticipated Sales

This year, El Buen Fin will run for an extra day, from Thursday to Monday. The traditional peak shopping days (first and last) now fall on non-working days, potentially boosting sales further.

With an expected sale volume surpassing 200 billion pesos, representing a 23.8% increase from 2024, El Buen Fin is poised to significantly contribute to Mexico’s economy.

Promoting National Consumption and “Hecho en México” Products

Alongside the sales growth, El Buen Fin aims to promote national consumption and products bearing the “Hecho en México” (Made in Mexico) label.

Key Participants

The event was discussed in a virtual conference titled “Impulso al ciclo de valor de las empresas en México” (Boosting the Value Cycle of Companies in Mexico). Notable attendees included Salomón Rosas, General Director of Competitivity and Competition at Mexico’s Secretaría de Economía, and Manuel Cardona, Director of Government Relations for the Asociación Nacional de Tiendas de Autoservicio y Departamentales (ANTAD).
