Key Players and Relevance

A technical meeting was held in Cancún, Quintana Roo, to gather proposals that will be integrated into the National Circular Economy Policy. The event was convened by the federal Secretariats of Economy and Environment, inviting business chambers and academic sectors in Quintana Roo.

María Jovita Portillo Navarro, president of the Confederation of Employers of the Republic of Mexico (COPARMEX) in Cancún, proposed establishing a regional circular construction laboratory in Quintana Roo. This lab would develop recyclable and local building materials, integrating small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) into eco-friendly or green value chains. Global Factor, a firm specializing in responsible policy formulation promoting circular economy, sustainable finance, biodiversity, and energy/climate transition, also participated in this proposal.

Addressing Critical Issues

Portillo Navarro emphasized the need to tackle issues such as rapid growth in tourism zones, massive waste generation, pressure on aquifers and urban deforestation, as well as incorporating sargasso into the circular economy vision.

Germán Ruiz Méndez’s Insights

In a separate interview, Germán Ruiz Méndez, Director of Sustainable Urban Development and Performance at the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), explained that these technical meetings stem from a comprehensive diagnosis identifying specific problems requiring attention to transition into a circular economy.

The primary issue affecting Quintana Roo, particularly its islands, is open-air dumpsites and poorly managed final disposal sites. These meetings aim to generate proposals for waste treatment, recycling (including tires), and addressing the unique sargasso phenomenon impacting the Mexican Caribbean.

Another technical meeting is planned in Cancún, focusing on tourism and taking place at Anáhuac University. This meeting will further contribute to shaping the National Circular Economy Policy.
