Introduction of a Dedicated Subsecretariat for Innovation and AI
Nuevo León, a state in Mexico, has become the first in the country to implement an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Cluster. This initiative brings together government, academia, and private industry under the “triple helix” model. Miriam Cantú, Director of Clusters at the State Secretariat of Economy, announced this development in an interview.
Growing Technological Ecosystem and Investment Attraction
Nuevo León’s thriving technological ecosystem, marked by significant data center investments, is transforming the state into a hub for innovation and technology in Latin America. The AI cluster is an institutional response to this burgeoning ecosystem.
Existing Clusters and New Initiatives
With 15 operational clusters already in Nuevo León, covering sectors like automotive, aerospace, electrodomésticos, and tourism, the state sets a precedent for organizing AI at the state level in Mexico.
A new initiative with the municipality of China, Nuevo León, focuses on enhancing ganadera (livestock) processes through AI research and technology. This project aims to improve nutrient absorption in livestock, benefiting both large-scale and small-scale farmers.
Key Objectives of the AI Cluster
- Democratization of AI: The cluster aims to make AI accessible and beneficial for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which constitute over 90% of businesses in Mexico.
- Talent Development: In collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (BID), the cluster conducted a study to identify talent needs in the state. The findings will be presented in December, paving the way for nurturing human capital required for technological transformation.
- Linking Developers and End-Users: The cluster serves as a bridge between major technology developers, such as Nvidia, and end-users. Current members include Cemex, Metalsa, Ternium, and the Technological Institute of Monterrey.
Impact on Local Industries and SMEs
The benefits of AI in Nuevo León will extend beyond the Monterrey metropolitan area, reaching municipalities with specific industrial vocations and small businesses. By offering affordable AI solutions, the cluster aims to empower SMEs and foster inclusive growth.
