The Rising Demand for AI and Data Centers in Mexico

As artificial intelligence (AI) in Mexico is projected to reach a market value of $3.7 billion by 2024, the data centers supporting this growth face a significant energy infrastructure challenge. The rapid expansion of e-commerce, AI, and digital transformation in businesses has increased the demand for reliable, efficient, and sustainable energy infrastructure.

According to DatacenterDynamics, Mexico currently boasts 1,269 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity in data centers, making it the second-largest market in Latin America in terms of square footage and energy power. This rapid growth underscores the urgent need to address Mexico’s infrastructure challenges.

AI Boom and Investment Opportunities

The Mexican AI market is expected to reach an estimated value of $3.7 billion by 2024, according to Statista Market Insights, making it one of the fastest-growing technology sectors in the country. This growth is driving increased demand for high-density power and cooling infrastructure, emphasizing the need for energy efficiency innovations.

Fernando Velasco, General Manager of Generac Mexico, highlights that AI advancements and their exponential energy demand per rack pose additional challenges. He projects that global energy consumption could reach nearly 1,000 terawatt-hours (TWh) by 2030 due to AI growth and high-performance computing (HPC) technology’s power requirements.

Generac Introduces New Generator Line for Data Centers

To tackle these challenges, Generac launched a new line of backup generators specifically designed for the growing data center market. The five models range from 2.25 MW to 3.25 MW and seamlessly integrate into high-capacity energy ecosystems. These generators are known for their performance, low emissions, redundant start systems, and operation capabilities in temperatures up to 50°C, meeting the industry’s strictest standards.

Julio César Becerril, Regional Data Center & Telecom BDM LATAM of Generac, emphasizes the need for reliable and scalable energy solutions that meet critical data center requirements. The company’s portfolio includes modular power systems (MPS), configurable disconnect switches, and custom packaging to address the energy demand driven by AI expansion and a challenging energy environment marked by outdated electrical grids and extreme weather events.
