In response to the rising number of road accidents linked to alcohol consumption during holiday celebrations, the Government of Mexico City has launched the “Drive Without Alcohol” operation. During the kickoff of the operation, Mexico City’s Chief of Government, Clara Brugada Molina, highlighted that the “Drive Without Alcohol” program has reduced accidents by 78% and fatalities by 77% during peak hours since its implementation in 2003.
“We do not aim to punish but prevent tragedies. This program saves lives,” Brugada stated, urging citizens to celebrate responsibly and emphasizing that road safety is a shared responsibility between authorities and drivers.
Program Participants and Statistics
Pablo Vázquez Camacho, Head of the Mexico City Security Department, informed that over 500 personnel will participate in the device, supported by cutting-edge technology and human rights personnel accompaniment.
Moreover, 47% of the operational team are women, strengthening gender perspective in program implementation.
Since 2003, more than 76,000 checkpoints have been set up, conducting 23 million interviews and administering over 2 million breathalyzer tests, according to official data.
First Detention of the 2025-2026 Operation
During the program’s launch in Pino Suárez, a driver was taken into custody by the civil judge after exceeding permissible alcohol levels. The driver’s vehicle was impounded.
