How the IEPS was Adjusted for 2026

As part of the Economic Package 2026, lawmakers approved an increase in what is called a “healthy tax” on flavored beverages, such as regular soft drinks and industrialized juices. The tax per liter will rise from 1.6451 pesos in 2025 to 3.0818 pesos for 2026.

For the first time, beverages with natural or artificial sweeteners—such as light, zero, or diet versions—will have an IEPS of 1.50 pesos per liter. This tax was reduced, as the initial proposal by the Ministry of Finance was for 3.0818 pesos per liter.

The Association of Mexican Beverages (MexBeb) had anticipated in previous weeks that the IEPS adjustments would lead to a price increase of up to 15% for soft drinks.

This measure aims to discourage soft drink consumption, promoting a positive impact on health. Along with flavored beverages, cigarettes and serums are also expected to see price increases due to the IEPS adjustments.

Monex Grupo Financiero predicts relatively significant inflationary pressures for the first quarter of the following year, with rates above 4% in February and March, exceeding the Banco de México’s target. This level of inflation hasn’t been seen since June 2025.
