Background on Jair Bolsonaro and His Relevance

Jair Bolsonaro, a former president of Brazil from 2019 to 2022, is known for his ultraconservative views and policies. His presidency was marked by controversial decisions, including attempts to weaken environmental protections and allegations of corruption. Bolsonaro’s political influence remains significant, as evidenced by the ongoing investigation into his allies.

Investigation Details

On Friday, the Brazilian police initiated an investigation against two prominent allies of Jair Bolsonaro in the Congress, suspecting them of misappropriating parliamentary funds. According to a judicial document obtained by AFP, a supreme court judge authorized seven searches related to the investigation. These searches targeted locations linked to Sóstenes Cavalcante, a bolsonarist leader in the Chamber of Deputies, and Carlos Jordy, another legislator supportive of the former ultraconservative president.

Allegations of Fund Misuse

Cavalcante and Jordy, along with five others in their inner circle, are under scrutiny for allegedly “diverting and subsequently concealing public funds,” as stated in a police communique. The misappropriated funds originated from the monthly allocation each deputy receives for expenses related to their mandate. Investigators believe the money was misused through fraudulent car rental contracts.

Seized Cash and Statements

Following searches in Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia, police reportedly found at least 400,000 reais (approximately $70,000) in cash at a property linked to Cavalcante. He claimed the money was legitimate, derived from selling real estate and received in cash. Cavalcante also mentioned forgetting to make the bank deposit due to work pressures.

Carlos Jordy denied the allegations in a social media video, calling the police action “cowardly.”

Previous Investigations and Bolsonaro’s Current Status

This investigation stems from a previous operation in December 2024, targeting potential crimes such as embezzlement, money laundering, and criminal organization.

Bolsonaro himself is currently in police custody since November, serving a 27-year sentence for attempting a coup in 2022 to prevent the inauguration of his successor, left-leaning Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Congressional Actions and Bolsonaro’s Favor

The predominantly conservative Congress recently passed a law that could reduce Bolsonaro’s sentence effectively, potentially leaving him with less than two years remaining. Lula announced his intention to veto the law, though Congress could override the presidential decision and push for its implementation.
