For 18 years, there has been a labor conflict among the workers of Cananea. The Mexican government, under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, has successfully brokered a historic agreement to end the strike and address environmental and health concerns of affected communities.

This combined effort amounts to a total of 2,222.6 million pesos for the Integral Environmental and Social Justice Plan.

Resource Distribution

The plan ensures that mining workers or their widows receive the resources directly, without intermediaries. Grupo México will contribute 1,500 million pesos, adding to the 59 million already deposited by them in 2018 and 2019. The federal government will contribute 483.6 million pesos, and the state of Sonora will provide 180 million pesos.

Environmental and Health Initiatives

The Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) will implement environmental justice actions, including:

  • Construction of 16 water purification plants by CONAGUA and adaptation of existing ones
  • Equipment and operation of a regional water quality laboratory
  • Establishment of water quality monitoring stations
  • Construction of the Regional Hospital in Ures, featuring specialty consultations, a renal health center, a specialized laboratory for heavy metals and toxicology
  • IMSS-Bienestar will improve physical infrastructure and equipment for healthcare services in the state
