Introduction
Every year-end, I undertake the exercise of selecting individuals and events that have shaped public discourse, rearranged priorities, and left lasting impressions or lessons that carry over to the next cycle. In 2025, politics became more international due to the shadow of the United States, more technology-driven with the normalization of Artificial Intelligence, and more contentious due to street protests, institutional uncertainty, and a lackluster economy.
The Common Thread: Control of the Narrative
Throughout 2025, the struggle for control over the narrative emerged as a central theme. The government’s role as both protagonist and antagonist diminished, with business leaders, emerging movements, protest leadership, or media personalities becoming news in their own right. When this happens, power is measured less by decrees and more by attention: who can establish the framework, the villain, and the solution.
Countdown: From Symbolic to Structural
- 13) León XIV. The death of a pope and the selection of a new one is not an external detail for Mexico; it’s a symbol that activates identities, values, and moral discussions. In times of polarization, these references function as “bridges” for some and “flags” for others.
- 12) Carlos Manzo and the Sombrero Movement. 2025 confirmed that formal politics no longer monopolizes leadership. Movements with their own narratives, simple codes, and the ability to grow through emotional identification emerged. Sometimes they don’t start as power projects, but they become brands: belonging, language, and community.
- 11) Marches, Blockades, and “Black Block”. Protest was the recurring language of the year. However, when the “black block” appears, the debate shifts from demands to public order. This shift usually benefits those who impose the narrative or position themselves as victims of repression; nonetheless, this block disperses protests.
- 10) “La Barredora”. In Mexico, certain criminal groups become “characters” because they operate as an indirect political actor, influencing local economies, daily life, and the state’s work. Their mere mention becomes synonymous with territorial control and corruption.
- 9) Mexican Capos in the U.S. In 2025, the demand for Mexico to extradite imprisoned drug lords to the U.S. became not just a security issue but also a political one, as the information they could provide, their status as protected witnesses, and all the speculation affected Mexico’s agenda.
- 8) Teuchitlán, Jalisco. Some places become symbols. Teuchitlán entered the year as a national reference due to what it represents and obligates debate: the state’s capacity, truth-seeking, and social pain that doesn’t fit in a “red news” label.
- 7) Fiscal Huachicol. “Huachicol” stopped being synonymous with clandestine tapping and became contraband, evasion, corruption, complicities, and other things. When the issue enters through the fiscal door, it also enters the political realm: costs for the country, embezzlement, and hope for exemplary punishments.
- 6) Slow-Growth Economy. The economy felt like a long walk: no collapse, but no enthusiasm. In these scenarios, expectations tend to be pessimistic and require a motivating, promoting state to avoid wear and tear that eventually affects the most disadvantaged.
- 5) Artificial Intelligence. What was a novelty in 2023-2024 became cultural infrastructure in 2025. It’s no longer a topic for specialists; it’s present in work, school, and propaganda. The debate shifted from “what is it?” to “who controls it?”, “for what purpose is it used?”, and “how does it alter jobs and opinions?”.
- 4) Salinas Pliego. Some characters operate as narrative magnets, attracting debate, polarizing, substituting topics, and displacing protagonists. In 2025, his figure concentrated conversation due to his ability to confront, set the agenda, and symbolize opposing sides; for the 4T, he became the perfect enemy, taking on the role once held by Calderón, García Luna, or Claudio X. González, who no longer function similarly as his nemesis.
- 3) New Judicial Power and “Accordions”. The year left the impression of a new board: different rules and uncertain incentives. A member election for the Judicial Power, amidst confusion, led to the appearance of “accordions” that encapsulate the moment: the starting point of this new power was far from positive, giving the impression of being captured, and only its actions will prove its autonomy or subordination.
- 2) Trump. Trump was, once again, an event in himself. Not just for what he says but also because he compels Mexico to confront an uncomfortable mirror: migration, tariffs, security, ideology, and negotiation under pressure. His presence reorders the Mexican agenda and puts investments on hold, undoubtedly deserving highlight.
- 1) Claudia Sheinbaum. The president was the person of the year because she is at the center of the new cycle: she defines priorities, absorbs costs, and marks the possibility of stability. The first real year of a government is not about ceremony but about proof: whether it can order the agenda or if the agenda orders it.
As always, some names are missing, and interpretations abound. However, 2025 leaves us with this: politics is no longer confined to Palacio; it’s played out on the border, in the streets, in courts, in daily economics, and increasingly in the dispute over narrative control.
