BBVA, Santander, Banorte, and Banamex Remain Leaders in Mexico’s Banking Sector

Key Players and Their Market Positions

BBVA, Santander, Banorte, and Banamex have maintained their leading positions in Mexico’s banking sector, controlling over half of the system’s assets. As of October 2025, these four institutions hold 54.2% of the total assets in the Mexican banking system, which amounts to more than 15.6 trillion pesos.

BBVA Mexico

BBVA Mexico remains the local banking sector leader with assets of nearly 3.4 trillion pesos as of October 2025, accounting for 21.70% of the system. A year prior, BBVA’s market participation was 22.14%, with assets totaling 3.2 trillion pesos.

Banco Santander Mexico

Banco Santander Mexico secured the second position with assets of 2.08 trillion pesos, or 13.30% of the total. In October 2024, Santander’s assets were 1.95 trillion pesos, representing 13.21% of the market.

Banorte

Banorte placed third with assets of 1.87 trillion pesos, or 12.0% of the total. In comparison, Banorte’s market participation was 12.33% with assets of 1.82 trillion pesos in the previous year.

Banamex

Banamex, now separate from Citi, holds the fourth position with assets of 1.13 trillion pesos, or 7.22% of the total. In the preceding year, Banamex had a market participation of 10.24% with assets valued at 1.51 trillion pesos.

Movements in the Banking Sector

Several significant changes have occurred within Mexico’s banking sector this year:

  • Santander: Surpassed 2 trillion pesos in assets, solidifying its position as the second-largest bank.
  • Citi: After separating from Banamex, Citi now occupies the eighth position with assets worth 3.68% of the total.
  • Kapital: Following its acquisition of Intercam’s business, Kapital (formerly Autofin) experienced substantial growth, rising from the 35th to the 28th position with a 0.36% market share.
  • Intercam: After the Kapital acquisition, Intercam’s position dropped from 24th to 38th place with a 0.07% market share.
  • CIBanco: Following allegations from the U.S. Treasury Department, CIBanco sold its business to Multiva and others, leading to the revocation of its license. CIBanco is no longer listed by the CNBV.
